    Nunzia Fontana was born in 1984 in Agrigento, Italy.

    She received the M. Sc. (summa cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering and the Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2008 and in 2012, respectively.

    During her Ph.D., she was visiting student at Queen Mary University of London, under the supervision of professor Yang Hao.

    From 2012 to 2016 she was post-Doc researcher at the University of Pisa (Department of Information Engineering).

    From 2016 to 2019 she was Researcher with the CNIT (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni).

    In 2017, she distinguished herself as a co-founder of the startup company Free-Space Electromagnetic Technologies, now spin-off of University of Pisa.

    She started her academic teaching experience in 2010, and from 2016 to 2019 teaching Electromagnetic radiation and biological interaction for Biomedical Engineering as external lecturer at the University of Pisa (Department of Information Engineering).

    From 2019 to 2022 she was Assistant Professor at the University of Pisa (DESTEC Department) teaching Electrical circuits for Electronic, Telecommunications, Electrical and Biomedical Engineering.

    Since 2022, she is Associate Professor of Elettrotecnica (Circuits Theory) at the University of Pisa (DESTEC Department) for Electronic, Telecommunications, Biomedical and Management Engineering.

    International coordination activities

    • Associate Editor of the ACES Journal, 2019 – currently

    Awards

    • IEEE Senior Member (2022)
    • Co-founder of the spin-off Free Space Electromagnetic Technologies

    International Conferences (Technical Program Co-Chairperson)

    • ACES 2023 (Monterey, USA)
    • ACES 2024 (Orlando, USA)

    Prof. Fontana is the author or co-author of more than 60 papers published on international journals and international conference proceedings.

    Her current research activity deals with:

    - the optimization of Wireless Power Transfer systems through full-wave numerical analysis and their implementation and validation on the measuring bench.

    - the modeling of electromagnetic fields as well as the optimization of complex electromagnetic systems.

    Her scientific activity was mainly involved in the field of Applied Electromagnetics and microwave circuits with innovative results in the study of:

    - the electromagnetic decoupling of radiofrequency coils for Magnetic Resonance applications at Ultra High-Field (7 Tesla) through the use of metamaterials;

    - design, electromagnetic simulation, prototyping and radiofrequency measurement of miniaturized broadband antennas in HF, VHF and UHF frequency bands;

    - design, simulation, prototyping and measurement of broadband balun for VHF and UHF frequency band antennas; numerical evaluation of the interaction of electromagnetic waves and human tissues; magnetic hyperthermia through the use of superparamagnetic nanoparticles.

    She worked in several research and industrial projects in collaboration with several companies and universities, which gave her a remarkable experience in prototype and products testing and measurements, interaction with high specialized companies and suppliers, interaction with scientists having different professional background, which provided her an open-mind approach in problem solving.

    Prof. Fontana is currently teaching “Elettrotecnica” (Circuits Theory), to the students ofElectronic, Telecommunications, Biomedical and Management Engineering.

    From 2019 to 2022 she taught “Elettrotecnica” (Circuits Theory) to the students of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Biomedical Engineering.

    In 2021 she taught "Electromagnetic numerical methods and CAD software for RF, Microwaves, Biomedical and EMC applications" to the PhD students of Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria dell’Informazione (PhD Course), Università di Pisa.

    From 2014 to 2019 she taught “Radiazioni elettromagnetiche ed interazioni biologiche” (Electromagnetic radiation and biological interaction) to the students of Biomedical Engineering as external lecturer at the University of Pisa (Department of Information Engineering).
